EU - Japan: liberalization of agribusiness trade

With the major understanding reached recently by the negotiators, the following basic points have been settled with regard to free trade in favour of agriculture and agribusiness:

  • the abatement of 85% of custom tariffs currently in use on entry into to Japan;
  • the acknowledgement of 205 IG European agribusinesses and wine with the already predicted possibility that other protected denominations may be added;
  • update of laws on European and international food security (including labels);
  • intent to simplify the approval and customs clearance of products and to insure the completion of procedures for the importation without payment delays and unjustified bureaucratic compliance;
Furthermore, the agreement will touch upon the following:
·       regulations on the protection of commercial secrets, on the brands, protection of royalties and patents and regulations on civil protection of intellectual property rights;
·       fine tuning of laws on investment protection;
·       the fundamental elements of the EU approach with regard to sustainable development.
