Germany: decrease in meat production

The Federal Office of German Statistics (Destatis) informs us that in 2018 meat production in Germany decreased by 1.5% compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 8 million tons.
Particulars follow:
Pork: volume of butchered meat down 2.9%.  With 56.6 million animals slaughtered in 2018, the number of pigs slaughtered decreased by 3.0% compared to the previous year.  The largest decrease was registered in the number of imported pigs (-17.9%) slaughtered on German farms.  In the same period, the number of animals of German origin slaughtered decreased by 1.9%.  Consequently the total amount of pork decreased by 2.9%, at 5.3. million tons.
Beef: volume of butchered meat decreased by 2.4%.  The number of cows slaughtered for commercial purposes decreased by 3.1%, down to 3.4 million animals compared to 2017.  This corresponds to 1.1 million tons of beef slaughtered in 2018, 2.4% less than the previous year.
Poultry: an increase of 3.7% in the volume of butchered meat.  Unlike the decrease for other animals, the volume of poultry meat produced in 2018 increased by 3.7% compared to the previous year, for a total of 1.6 million tons.  5.3% more young chicken meat was produced.  There was also an increase in duck meat (+2.3%) and turkey (+0.4%.
