Philippines: elimination of non-tariff barriers for agriculture
Philippine President Rodrigo Duerte recently signed a provision which signals the elimination of non-tariff barriers regarding the import of farming products.
With an appreciated philosophy opposed to widespread protectionism, the Philippine government believes that such barriers raise prices to the disadvantage of the poorer people of the country.
The law, already in force, aims at efficiently rationalizing the procedure and the requisites for the validation of importers, and lessen the time needed for importation requests.
It will also allow the temporary importation of certain agricultural products above their minimum authorized volume, particularly sugar and rice.
