Rumania: the EU’S major producer of walnuts
In 2017, Rumania became Europe’s major producer of walnuts after two years of record production thanks mainly to the increase in dedicated land.
In recent years, 400 hectares have been cultivated, with another 300 in preparation.
The estimates published in the last report by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) indicate that for 2018 the Rumanian production of walnuts will reach 44.000 tons, compared to 42.400 in France and 16.000 in Spain.
In 2016, Rumania produced 34.100 tons of walnuts, making it the second largest producer after France, whereas in 2017 it produced 45.800 tons of walnuts.
