Tunisia: olive oil exports

The President of Confagricoltura, Massimiliano Giansanti, has urged the summit of the European Commission, the Presidents of the House and the Senate, and Italian ministers of the European Parliament to maintain alert to the request apparently put forward by the Tunisian government to add further concessions to those already requested with regards to duty exemptions in the export of olive oil to the EU.
It would mean extending concessions made by the EU in the years 2016 and 2017 regarding a duty-free contingent of 35.000 tons of olive oil to add to the customary one of 56.700 tons.
Despite this concession not being used by Tunisian exporters other than for 2.557 tons total in the two years, Confagricoltura has expressed strong concerns seeing that the production and exports of Tunisian olive oil have increased considerably, so much so that in the first weeks of 2018 it had already exhausted its annual duty-free amount of 56.700 tons.
